See the world differently and learn to turn everyday scenes into powerful, story-driven images.
FULL DAY

Bologna, Sunday Afternoon by Andrew Thurtell
Street photography is about more than just walking around with a camera — it’s about learning to see moments before they happen.
In this hands-on street photography workshop, you’ll learn how to recognise compelling scenes, work with natural light, compose dynamic frames, and confidently photograph in public spaces.
We’ll explore practical techniques for timing, layering, and storytelling so you can capture authentic human moments as they unfold.
You’ll practice real-world shooting, get personalised feedback, and leave with a new understanding of how to turn everyday streets into unforgettable photographs.
Whether you’re just starting or looking to refine your skills, this street photography class gives you the tools and confidence to see, shoot, and share your unique vision.

Why a 35mm or 50mm prime lens is often superior to a massive zoom, but also why a versatile zoom can be a brilliant choice and open up many options for the street photographer.

Understand the pros and cons of all your shooting modes for street photography, plus experimenting with shutter speed to introduce blur and movement. And unleash the power of Zone Focusing.

Learn when to use black and white to simplify scenes and focus on light and shape, and when to use colour to highlight mood, contrast, and details that bring your image to life.

Discover how to shoot candid street moments authentically, and when you want a posed portrait, master the strategies to get a natural “yes” without breaking the flow of the scene.

Train your eye to notice moments, gestures, and the relationships between people and the space. Anticipate scenes before they happen, while developing a deeper awareness of light, movement, and storytelling.

From finding pockets of light in dark alleys (chiaroscuro) to using backlight to turn people into anonymous, graphic shapes, the street provides high-contrast environments that are perfect for drama.

Explore the difference between moving through a location ‘hunting’ for images versus finding a background and waiting for the image to emerge.

Learn to recognise the timing and anticipation that turn ordinary scenes into unforgettable photographs. that capture moments full of life.

Strengthen your images with powerful composition techniques like layering, framing and leading lines that bring clarity and impact to your work.

Move beyond single images and start telling deeper visual stories. Learn how to identify themes in your work and sequence your photos into a cohesive narrative.

I'd recommend bringing the lenses you have, as my goal is to get you to master the ones you have. A 50mm or 35mm lens is great, as is a typical standard zoom such as a 24-70mm or 18-55. I'll also be talking about longer lenses for street photography so if you have a lightweight longer zoom such as a 70-200 that is also a good idea (but I understand if you don't want to carry it all day). Please get in touch to ask me about your lenses at andrew@thurtell.com.au.
